Students' Basic Needs

Students have a lot of basic needs, when they are in middle school they are experiencing rapid changes and are in a time of need from their teachers.  It is important for students to have their interest met while in class (Levin and Nolan, p. 106).  If a teacher provides an example of a students favorite movie to introduce a different aspect of the lesson, the student could immediately relate to the information (Levin and Nolan, p. 106).  I want to provide students with different interest a way to enjoy the lesson.  I have experienced a lot of different activities in my life so I feel as if I can make different examples of sports, music, movies, video games, outdoors, and examples that will draw the students in to the lesson.  This will help students to remain focused and enjoy learning.  It is important to allow students to feel comfortable in the classroom, give them the sense of acceptance, and allow them to feel as if they belong (Levin and Nolan, p. 106).  Allowing a student to feel comfortable in the classroom will help them want to work because they do not feel as if their work is a waste of time.  This also helps students respect each other and their teacher.  Respect is essential in a classroom because the students have to respect me and their work to learn.  If a student feels like they are accepted they are going to feel comfortable asking questions and talking openly in class discussions.   This will also help students self-confidence which is important in their middles school years.  Allowing a student to feel as if they belong will also help them to want to learn.  If the class feels like a family, they will work together, help each other out, pick each other up when they are struggling, and be proud of who they are and what they do.  It is important that students needs are met every day and not one students is neglected.
